Billy Vaughan grew up helping on his family's farm on the Wake-Johnston County line. As a teenager, in addition to farming, he worked as a plumber's assistant installing and maintaining water systems, and later, after graduating college, a Dean's list student at NCSU, he worked in construction sales gaining familiarity with products related to lumber, plumbing, windows, and exterior siding. During this time of meeting daily on the job with builders, he decided to apply his growing construction knowledge and started offering remodeling services.
Time demands quickly became too great and he had to make a choice between the two careers. He opted to form Vaughan Building & Remodeling, Inc. At this point, Billy, with one or two assistants, personally did a large portion of the framing, siding, and roofing on the remodeling jobs, and he began developing relationships with trades people for the other tasks. He was offered and accepted the opportunity to participate in a developing neighborhood (back before that was happening on every corner) and built his first homes as speculative sales. These were successful, but he was finding his niche seemed to be the more detailed, client-driven custom work. Billy enjoyed meeting and helping homeowners, and the home owners found him refreshingly trustworthy and capable.
VBR declined another offer to do more speculative building, but requests for custom homes started coming in, and the remodeling continued. Then, an economic downturn hit the construction industry. Billy took a second job with a nationwide electrical construction company as a project manager. Thankfully, VBR was able to continue operating as well, and gained respect with our affiliates in this financially challenging season as a business that stilled paid its bills at the end of the day.
As the economy turned up again, two of VBR's present employees joined the team, and 13 years later, continue to lead framing, particularly on any projects with complicated requirements. Combined, they have over five decades of framing and carpentry experience and consistently deliver superior craftsmanship and professionalism. Billy doesn't get to "swing the hammer" on jobs much anymore as he is busy meeting with customers, designers, engineers, and subcontractors, and while on some days he misses it, he is grateful for the opportunity to assist the many clients VBR has served over the years. Often at the end of the projects, the once clients remain as friends.
Custom construction work demands skills on many levels. It requires understanding and translating the needs and wants of homeowners to create satisfactory real results, determining the best course of action through hundreds of decisions and unique home characteristics, and adherence to building codes and engineering specifications. Billy appreciates the challenge, and we value every opportunity given us by our clients as they trust VBR with their homes.
